Go to 2nd Avenue Deli (now at 162 E 33rd St.) for the best corned beef sandwich and matzoh ball soup around then head for a stroll through Central Park. Don’t forget to hire a bicycle and ride along the Hudson River!

4. Sydney – This Australian City is beautiful with expanses of water and many parks. Stay in the city and take a walk around the Sydney Opera House where you’ll also get spectacular views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Don’t forget to visit some of the many varied and spectacular beaches; Bondi, Manly, Palm Beach, etc.

5. Venice – Venice is unlike any other city. It is steeped in history and literally ’sits’ on water. Walk around this historical Italian fairyland or catch a boat taxi (or gondola). Don’t forget to relax at one or more of the many excellent cafes. Accommodation in Venice is pricey so stay at one of the nearby towns such as Mestre and catch the train to Venice.

1. EU Citizens

European Union has many countries at its member and the citizens of these countries do not require a visa for entering Spain. Being an EU citizen you have to carry your national identification card and driver’s license instead of the passport. 5. Bring necessary clothes and survival stuff. Bring long pants, long-sleeved shirt, eyeglasses, cap or hat to avoid mosquito bites. To further attracting illnesses from insects like dengue, leishmaniasis, and malaria, do bring insect repellant. Or, if you are planning to stay out overnight, bring mosquito nets, insect sprays, and necessary prescription medications.

6. Take taxi instead of busses. Bring money pouches strap around your neck. If you are driving your car, always keep the door locked.

7. Respect the locals.

8. If you are a victim of crime, report immediately.

9. Brazil like any other places has rules to follow. Obey them to keep you out of trouble.

Don’ts:

1. Never bring excessive valuables and show it to public. As much as possible leave your rings, necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelries in a safe place. You can rent a purchase deposit box to keep your valuables safe.

2. Don’t carry money and credit card you don’t need because you can never tell when pickpocketers attack. Although Brazil has several safe places for tourists like Rio de Janeiro, it is always wise to keep your money in safe place. Try to carry enough cash for the day or at least one credit card with you. Leave the rest in you hotel.

3. Don’t swim in any fresh waters.

4. Avoid eating street foods and drink only bottled water. Don’t handle any animals.

5. Don’t bring to your hotel room any strangers you meet outside.

1. Carnival
From mid to the end of February

Any list of events for a Brazil vacation has to begin with Carnival. While Rio de Janeiro probably springs to mind, it is worth remembering that every city in Brazil celebrates its own version of this traditionally Catholic event.

For those in pursuit of the traditional Carnival, go to where the Brazilians go; Recife or the less commercial festival of Olinda are both popular among Brazilian travelers. Recife, located in the northeastern part of the country, is widely known as the largest Carnival draw in the country. The mainstay of the Recife event is the Galo de Madrugada (Rooster of the Dawn) procession, which is literally as it sounds; a massive procession through the streets of seaside Recife which attracts roughly 2 million international visitors and local revelers alike.

For an ‘off the beaten path’ Carnival experience, head to the neighboring city of Olinda. Here the main draw is an unorganized celebration of music, where small bands of musicians (followed by dedicated fans of their music) wander the streets of the city and play their music to whoever is available to listen.

2. Festas Juninas
Throughout June

A traditional harvest event originally brought to Brazil by Portuguese settlers, this series of street carnivals, picnics and parties are celebrated across Brazil (though are most popular in the northeast) and are a popular escape from the Brazil winter.

Dedicated to Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter and celebrated by rural villages and large cities alike, this month of parties is marked by large bonfires and delicious traditional foods. It is often celebrated in honor of Saint John (the patron saint of a good harvest of corn).

These festivals include the traditional mainstays of games, music, food and costumes and if you take your Brazil vacation sometime in June, you’re likely to catch some of the festivities.

3. Brazilian Grand Prix
October (2009)

Although the demanding Brazilian Grand Prix track at Interlagos, Sao Paolo, is not necessarily the favorite of the drivers; it does have a reputation as an excellent spectator experience. Recognized as a top international draw for the country, thousands flock to Sao Paolo every October for this event, and tickets often sell out weeks in advance.

Even for non-motor sport fans, the electric atmosphere of Sao Paulo for the Grand Prix is an experience you’ll never forget and many people make their travel plans specifically for a Brazil Formula 1 vacation.

4. Festa do Peão Boiadeiro
End of August

Although hundreds of such events are held throughout Brazil, the Festa do Peão Boiadeiro in Barretos is generally accepted to be the world’s largest rodeo event of its kind. Begun in 1955 by a group of bachelors, this event moved in 1985 to a massive stadium designed to hold 35,000 people at any one time. Of course marked by the Brazilian trademarks of music, food and fun, this event is a great chance to don those cowboy boots and dig out that hat!

5. Bom Jesus dos Navegantes
New Year’s Day

The usual New Year celebrations are given a novel twist in Salvador de Bahia where Mass is accompanied by an enormous boat parade and procession, part of the four-day-long Bom Jesus dos Navegantes, or “Good Jesus of the Boatmen”.

A several-hundred year old tradition in this seafaring community, the celebrations held to bless the boatmen who would be spending extended periods of time at sea. Following Mass, an image of Jesus is carried out onto a flotilla of boats and sailed across the water to a nearby lighthouse.

Be sure to stick about after the procession, as the beach becomes the scene for a lively party which heralds the New Year in a typically Latin style.

Cape Town and Kruger National Park are the biggest selling destinations in South Africa, but wow, there is so much more to explore in this beautiful country! Let me divulge on its “must see and do’s”.

1. Cape Town, Western Cape Province

2. Cape Winelands, Western Cape Province

The Cape Winelands refers to the beautiful wine growing area stretching from Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch all the way over the Hottentots Holland mountain range to Montague and Robertson showcasing over 200 different wine estates. These world-class estates offer wine tasting and some offer cellar tours providing a fascinating insight to the winemaking industry. The scenery is magical with dramatic mountain backdrops and endless vineyards that change colours with the changing seasons.

3. Hermanus, Western Cape Province

Known as the best land based whale-watching destination in the world, Hermanus is visited by Southern Right Whales between May and December every year. Moving north from the cold Antarctic, attracted by the warmer waters along the South African coastline and the calm waters of the protected bays, they come to mate and calve. The most spectacular close up sightings of these gentle giants can be seen from the rocky coastline or from a licensed chartered boat offering exhilarating boat-based whale watching. Witness them skyhopping, lobtailing or breaching, typical actions that when seen close up leave you breathless. September month seems to attract the majority of numbers and this is also when you can experience the colourful Hermanus Whale Festival, festivities celebrating the return of the whales.

4. Garden Route, Western Cape Province

The coastal area stretching from Mossel Bay to Tsitsikamma is known as the Garden Route. A beautiful area made up of rugged rocky coastline, long white sandy beaches, fairytale evergreen forests, protected endemic fynbos vegetation and botanically rich lakes and estuaries. The popular coastal towns of George, Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay attract a huge number of tourists every year who come for the temperate climate, natural beauty and numerous outdoor activities.

5. Game Reserves of the Eastern Cape Province

Africa is well known for its exciting wildlife but also for its malaria. The Eastern Cape offers excellent Big 5 game viewing in a malaria free zone, a big draw card, especially for families travelling together with young kids.

6. Isimangaliso Wetland Park, Kwazulu Natal Province

Listed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in December 1999 in recognition of its superlative natural beauty. Covering about 240,000ha, with a further 84,000ha in, on or under the sea, this is a large chunk of sub-tropical paradise stretching 220km along the East Coast from St Lucia to the Mozambique border. As well as a mind-blowing range of natural systems, ranging from dune, swamp and coastal forests to rocky and sandy shores, coral reefs and submarine canyons, mangroves, savanna grassland and the largest protected wetland in southern Africa, it is a culturally fascinating area and has immense fun potential. Game drives, bird watching, hippo and crocodile cruises, cultural tours, fishing, canoeing, scuba diving, snorkelling and whale watching are some of the activities that can be enjoyed.

7. Kruger National Park, Limpopo and Mpumalanga Province

World renowned as an exceptional wildlife destination, Kruger National Park is approximately 2 million hectares in size and is South Africa’s largest game reserve. 8. Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Mpumalanga Province

The Sabi Sand Reserve is the birthplace of sustainable wildlife tourism in Southern Africa, and is the oldest of all the private reserves in South Africa. It has only ever been a wilderness area and is home to a vast wildlife population, including The Big Five, and a number of endangered species too. Flanking the Kruger National Park, animals pass unhindered between the reserves. This is where you will find some of the oldest and well-known private game reserves such as Londolozi, Mala Mala and Singita offering their exclusive luxury lodges and the authentic all-inclusive African safari experience.

9. Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng Province

The Cradle of Humankind Site covers 47 000 hectares of land, mostly privately owned and is made up of 12 dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossilised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. The dolomite in which the caves formed, started out as coral reefs growing in a warm shallow sea about 2.3 billion years ago. The Maropeng Visitors Centre, an internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, highlights, by means of interactive, visually stunning exhibits, the universal relevance of the Cradle of Humankind as our ancestral home. A fascinating display and a definite “must see”.

10. Soweto, Gauteng Province

Soweto – melting pot of South African urban culture, rich with the history of the struggle against apartheid. Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in South Africa with a population count of close to 900 000. The name Soweto is an acronym for South Western Townships, a cluster of townships sprawling across a vast area 20km south west of Johannesburg. Soweto is best visited accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will not only give a real sense of its history but help you understand its ongoing evolution. A tour to Soweto would normally include the Mandela Museum, where Madiba once lived; a stop at the Hector Pieterson Memorial; a drive down Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Prize winners (Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu); Freedom Square, where the ANC’s Freedom Charter was proclaimed to thousands in 1956; and the Regina Mundi Church, the “Parliament of Soweto”, where the bullet-marked walls are witness to ex-security-police brutality.
